So, it has been six months already in my love affair with spud.com and it’s fabulous organic food delivery service. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about it. Today is a big day for me in other ways as well. Today is the last day of my son being one. Tomorrow we start a new world, the “twos”. Although, I think that he already believes himself to be two, judging by his recent enjoyment of the word “no”, temper tantrums and throwing things. But at least I can keep him intrigued enough to try new foods if they come out of the great purple SPUD! box that appears on our doorstep. He especially loves the dry ice that comes with frozen items and that we love to put in a sink full of water so that the kitchen is filled with a misty fog. My son was my inspiration for switching to all organic foods and yet, I think it has made a difference for my whole family. Everyone feels better, really enjoys our fresh foods, and we are all losing weight. Well, except for my son, who eats and eats!

 I had friends who asked where I got the beautiful vegetables for a potluck dish, and even my husband can tell the difference now when we eat elsewhere and the produce is not organic. So overall, I would have to say spud.com has changed the way we eat, the way we feel, and has given me back precious time to spend with my toddler.

I don’t want to skip telling you about all of the lovely food that we have sampled over the last six months. Our favorite bread is by far the multi-grain sliced loaf from Essential baking.  It is a wonderful bread, perfect for sandwiches or in the morning with coffee. It is light, but solid and to me tastes faintly of a dark sourdough.

Another bread that we really have enjoyed is the parbaked garlic boulot from Boulangerie Nantaise. We keep it in the freezer and bake it when we need a fresh loaf of delicious, mouthwatering bread. It fills the whole house with a garlicky aroma and we can’t wait to break it out of the oven. It has a satisfying crunch when you first bite into it. For a change, we sometimes get their rosemary boulot loaf which smells equally deliocious when baking. 

My husbands hands down favorite treat is the 100% organic almond croissants- Croissants aux Amandes- from Boulangerie Nantaise. He can’t wait to warm one up in the oven. I think I once heard him say he could live on these.

Let’s not forget some of the delicious meats we have tried lately. For my son’s birthday party we ordered Thundering hooves ground beef patties and Organic Prairie organic beef hot dogs. The hot dogs were a hit with the kiddos and the moms. No leftovers at all! We paired them with organic hot dog and hamburger buns from Rudi’s organic bakery. Another favorite is the ground pork from Thundering Hooves farm. It comes frozen in a 1lb pack. We used it in a spaghetti sauce instead of beef and the flavor was incredible. I can really tell the difference in flavor now between organic grass fed meats and the ones we used to pick up at the grocery store. You need less to feel satisfied because the flavor is so intense. And you feel good supporting local.  We have also tried the chicken breasts, ground chicken, and ground beef. All were delicious. What I have sitting in my freezer right now waiting to cook is a whole chicken. It looks great. The chicken is certified organic, free range and was not fed antibiotics. They are raised on a farm in Eastern washington and locally packaged.

The strawberries and grapes this last month have been divine. My son just gobbles them up. Last week we took in a concert at the zoo, where you sit on blankets and eat picnic dinners while listening to wonderful music. Well, at least he people around us did. We spent most of the time chasing or ever escaping toddler, who seemed to wait until we were relaxed and sittng before darting off across the field between blankets and through groups of people where it would be rude for us to trample but just ok if you’re 3 feet tall and really, really cute.

When you add a groceryitem to your shopping basket you can choose to add it to your standing order too. The fresh harvest box updates on thursdays so after that time you can see which organic fruits and vegetables are going to come. And it is really easy to change which ones are coming if you decide to. For example for birthday party last week I added 3 lbs of grapes, some strawberries and blueberries because they are always a big seller among toddlers. The fruits have been just divine.
